Beginners Guide to Choosing a Pickleball Paddle

Pickleball refers to an American paddle sport that is more like tennis.

It involves two or more players that play on a level court with short-handled paddles and a pricked plastic ball volleyed over a low net.

A pickleball paddle is a short pole with a broad blade that is used in pickleball game.When choosing a pickleball paddle, there are three factors one has to consider; Weight, Handle and Core.

How to Choose a Pickleball Paddle

Weight
Out of the three factors, weight is the most important factor to consider when choosing a pickleball paddle.

A proper paddle weight is what one should go for when choosing a paddle.  This is one of the physical requirements in pickleball.

Having a too light paddle or a too heavy paddle can mess everything up for you. This is why having the right paddle weight is important to avoid future frustrations.

The following are features of a light paddle that will guide you to make the right choice

  1. It requires less arm strength.
  2. It is not good for people with hand/elbow/shoulder injuries, because it needs more energy and momentum to swing.
  3. It is mostly preferable for double players

If you would like to choose the medium weight paddle, the following are its features;

  1. It is the best choice for those with hand/shoulder/elbow injuries.
  2. If you have not yet figured out your preference and play style, this is the best choice for you.

If you are thinking of the heavy paddle as your choice, the following are its features;

  1. It requires more arm strength.
  2. It is the best for light hitters because it generates less head speed.
  3. Its most preferable for single players

CORE
When choosing a pickleball paddle, another factor to consider is the paddle core. We have three types of core that is the aluminium, polymer and nomex paddle.

The best choice is the polymer paddle because it gives you a great balance of power and control.

However, there are some niche cases where the aluminium or nomex paddle will work well for you

HANDLE
Another factor to consider is the handle. Most paddles are around 4’’ to 5’’, if you have smaller or wider hands the 4’’ paddles are the best choice for you. If you have big hands or are tennis playerthe 5’’, paddles are the best choice.

People who play tennis with two handed backhand, the long handle is preferably the best choice for them.

One should also consider the grip circumference. The standard grip circumference in pickleball is about 4.25’’. If you have a large hand, it is advisable you go for 4.5’’.

In conclusion, when choosing a pickleball paddle consider the three above factors, but most importantly consider the weight of the paddle.

This is because having just the right paddle weight will give you the best experience in pickleball.

However,do not dismiss the other two factors because they are also important considerations when choosing a pickleball paddle.
